Trans
As the University of Nottingham's Trans Officer, I am here to try to provide the trans students with the provisions they need to succeed in higher education.
This year I will be arranging various 'safe-space' socials, campaigns and welfare events to support trans students and raise awareness about trans issues within our university. If you are trans and wish to specify me as your 'buddy' (see welfare page for 'buddy' service information), please feel free to do so.
To get involved or for further information, please feel free to contact me.
Bex Harper.
Safe-space Socials
These bi-termly trans socials provide a safe space for trans students to discuss their difficulties with myself and our LGBT Officer and to make new friends. The issues discussed at these meetings will be taken into account and we will do our best to improve the situation.
If clubbing isn't for you, then recommended are the quieter events, such as our monthly Queer Café (ran by Bex) or film screenings, to meet other LGBT students.
Campaigns
This year Bex will begin negotiating with the university a 'third-box' option on all forms which specify gender. She will also be trying to negotiate getting Gender Neutral Toilets added to all future university buildings built, as well as campaigning for a set of GNTs in the Portland Building.
In February, Bex is hoping to run a one-day LGBT medical conference in Nottingham, taking charge of the trans side of the event and will ask the campaigns officers and welfare officer to assist her in organizing this event.
Welfare Events
A Trans Awareness Workshop has been arranged for the Autumn term, which is open to any students and staff at the university to educate them on trans issues.
There will also be a trans-specific committee welfare training evening, so that our 2009-2010 committee will know how to deal with trans issues; so you can be sure we understand your needs.
